Savel noted that the students planted peppers, pumpkins, zucchini, sunflowers, marigolds, carrots, radishes, kale, cilantro, basil and beets. At previous visits, volunteers taught the students about plants, asked what types of vegetables they wanted to grow, helped them plant seeds and instructed them to make unique plant markers. “I believe if children plant vegetables, they eat more,” she said.Īccording to volunteer Becky Foltz, this was the group’s fourth stop at the school this year. The students designed the patterns on the markers during a previous visit from the Lake County Master Gardener Volunteers. Plants and markers are stacked as Elm Street Elementary School’s fourth-grade students learn gardening skills on May 16.

Volunteer Michele Clouden added that the program helps students develop self-confidence by achieving goals, while also encouraging them to eat more vegetables. “Something we hope students learn from this is being responsible for and taking care of living things. “This program is being offered to give students life skills outside the classroom,” explained fourth-grade teacher Clorissia Savel. The activity was part of the Master Gardeners’ latest visit to the Painesville school this year, with previous visits including lessons about plants and how to care for them. The students added their plants to the neighboring Red Raider Gardens at Elm on May 16, with help from Lake County Master Gardener Volunteers. Fourth-graders at Elm Street Elementary School in Painesville are gaining hands-on experience growing vegetables and other plants as part of a new community partnership.
